Abstract submissions are now closed

Following our prior communication that the SMAANZ Conference planned for Canberra will be postponed to 2021, we are excited to release details of SMAANZ Week 2020, to be held from Monday 30 November to Friday 4  December, 2020.

The events will take part over the week in an online format, with opportunities for members and the wider community to join in activities as they like over the week.

In our planning, we have sought to design a program which encourages scholarly inquiry, provides a forum to present and communicate research, and facilitates academic networking. Of course, the online setting provides challenges, but also opportunities to revisit and trial some new initiatives.

Multiple 90 minute ‘live’ academic sessions around different sport management themes. Each will contain four (10 minute) presentations and a discussion or panel, facilitated by a selected theme leader from the SMAANZ Community

A series of ‘pre-recorded’ presentations and content available for viewing and feedback over the event

An awards session highlighting award winners (featuring best paper, student award and industry engagement awards)

Daily 60 minute lunchtime workshops

Two Industry Panels – featuring high profile speakers on prominent topics

Online social and networking activities

HDR event including sessions partnered with CAUTHE and ANZALS

Face to face social events held in satellite venues anywhere that multiple SMAANZ Week 2020 attendees may reside*

*We aim to facilitate concurrent, small networking events in multiple cities during the week. These will be announced pending local restrictions in December 2020

The program will consist of multiple opportunities to present academic work and research in multiple formats including a 10-minute presentations as part of a live online session and 10-minute pre-recorded presentations (accepted presenters to this format will need to provide a ten-minute video that can be shared publically as part of the program).

The call for papers/abstracts is now closed. In line with the process for SMAANZ conferences, all submitted work will undergo a double-blind peer-review process with submission accepted for presentation at ‘SMAANZ Week 2020’.

When you submit your abstract you can select to be considered for either format (i.e. live session or pre-recorded presentation), but please note that given the format of the online sessions and potential for high demand, there may be limited opportunities to present as part of the live sessions (which will run between 11 am and 5 pm NZDT | 9 am and 3 pm AEDT). As such, while we will ask for preferences when you submit an abstract, the SMAANZ Week 2020 organising group and theme leader for each session will make selections of the presentations to be featured in live sessions based on peer review and reviewer feedback.

With a view to maximising the impact of SMAANZ Week 2020 and the visibility of the work of the community, SMAANZ will be making all activities free of charge for the community, including current and past members, as well as those in the wider sport management community.

In addition, the board has made the decision to extend all current SMAANZ members through to September 2021 for no charge. That means if you attended the 2019 SMAANZ Conference in Christchurch, or have joined as a SMAANZ full or HDR member since October 1, 2019, you will remain a SMAANZ member through to September 30, 2021.

A reminder for non-members, that if you wanted to vote in the SMAANZ elections in 2020 or be eligible for any SMAANZ awards in 2020 or 2021, you will need to register as a member, which you can do online at any time.

SMAANZ Week will be a multidisciplinary conference targeting innovative and thought-provoking research on a broad range of sport management topics, including the management, marketing, impacts, and governance of sport, sport events, and sport facilities at all levels. We welcome papers utilising diverse methodological and theoretical approaches, as well as papers with an applied or action focus that may be of particular interest to industry.

We invite the submission of a variety of abstract types, including empirical, methodological, conceptual, and teaching. Completed research or research in progress is welcomed.
